I am trying to use wxPython on my Linux machine but am getting the
same(?) error. I agree that it is a problem with wxPython
because I can run the wxGTK demos with no problem.
However, the timing that the error occurs is somewhat different -
seemingly random... I could not identify the exact conditions
but it seemed like something happens when the window needs to be
repainted or something. It doesn't occur 100% of the
time, but is too unstable... What could be wrong?

I thought maybe that there could be a bug in the threads, and
tried to disable them by setting WXP_USE_THREAD = 0 in the Makefile
and recompiled wxPython ... but it didn't help.
(Is this the correct way to disable threads anyway?)

Thanks in advance

Sorry, I forgot to write it...

I'm using Linux with a 2.0.36 kernel.

gtk-1.2.7, wxGtk-2.1.3, wxPython-2.1.3

They were compiled from source with
egcs-2.90.29 980515 (egcs-1.0.3 release)

My python is
Python 1.5.1 (#1, Sep  3 1998, 22:51:17)  [GCC 2.7.2.3] on linux-i386

It may not solve this particular problem but I would suggest going back to
gtk-1.2.6 as there have been reports of general bugginess in 1.2.7.

I switched back to gtk-1.2.6 and it looks like it's working now...
So it was a gtk problem ... ?

Anyway, now I can try it out! Thanks!

In reply to this post by Hideo Bannai
I am glad to hear this.  My problem was never solved with gtk-1.2.6 so it
appears not to be the same as yours.
I switced to a complete new distribution in order to proceed.  I was never
able to isolate the problem.
